True Story of Rudolph

Ever wonder how "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" was invented? Here is the story how...
A man named Bob May, depressed and brokenhearted, stared out his drafty apartment window into the chilling December night.

His 4-year-old daughter Barbara sat on his lap quietly sobbing. Bobs wife, Evelyn, was dying of cancer. Little Barbara couldn't understand why her mommy could never come home. Barbara looked up into her dad's eyes and asked, "Why isn't Mommy just like everybody else's Mommy?" Bob's jaw tightened and his eyes welled with tears. Her question brought waves of grief, but also of anger. It had been the story of Bob's life. Life always had to be different for Bob.

Small when he was a kid, Bob was often bullied by other boys. He was too little at the time to compete in sports. He was often called names he'd rather not remember. From childhood, Bob was different and never seemed to fit in. Bob did complete college, married his loving wife and was grateful to get his job as a copywriter at Montgomery Ward during the Great Depression. Then he was blessed with his little girl. But it was all short-lived. Evelyn's bout with cancer stripped them of all their savings and now Bob and his daughter were forced to live in a two-room apartment in the Chicago slums. Evelyn died just days before
Christmas in 1938.

Bob struggled to give hope to his child, for whom he couldn't even afford to buy a Christmas gift. But if he couldn't buy a gift, he was determined a make one - a storybook! Bob had created an animal character in his own mind and told the animal's story to little Barbara to give her comfort and hope. Again and again Bob told the story, embellishing it more with each telling. Who was the character? What was the story all about? The story Bob May created was his own autobiography in fable form. The character he created was a misfit outcast like he was... The name of the character?
A little reindeer named Rudolph, with a big shiny nose. Bob finished the book just in time to give it to his little girl on Christmas Day.. But the story doesn't end there.

The general manager of Montgomery Ward caught wind of the little storybook and offered Bob May a nominal fee to purchase the rights to print the book. Wards went on to print,
Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and distribute it to children visiting Santa Claus in their stores. By 1946 Wards had printed and distributed more than six million copies of Rudolph. That same year, a major publisher wanted to purchase the rights from Wards to print an updated version of the book. In an unprecedented gesture of kindness, the CEO of Wards returned all rights back to Bob May. The book became a best seller. Many toy and marketing deals followed and Bob May, now remarried with a growing family, became wealthy from the story he created to comfort his grieving daughter. But the story doesn't end there either.

Bob's brother-in-law, Johnny Marks, made a song adaptation to Rudolph. Though the song was turned down by such popular vocalists as Bing Crosby and Dinah Shore, it was recorded by the singing cowboy, Gene Autry.
"Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" was released in 1949 and became a phenomenal success, selling more records than any other Christmas song, with the exception of "White Christmas."

The gift of love that Bob May created for his daughter so long ago kept on returning back to bless him again and again. And Bob May learned the lesson, just like his dear friend Rudolph, that being different isn't so bad. In fact, being different can be a blessing.
Merry Christmas!

Nathan...tsk tsk tsk

Once again Nathan has made a blog and deleted it. The first time he put posts about all of his trophies, and then didn't use his blog for AGES!! Then he decided to delete it. About 10 days ago, he decided he wanted to make a blog again. He put a couple posts on, then decided to delete it about a week later. I wonder if he will ever keep a blog for longer than three weeks.

My Thanksgiving

Hola! For my Thanksgiving, we got together with some people, and we brought stuffing, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, and pie. Everything was great!! I made the sauce that went over the sweet potatoes. When we got to the person's house, actually, I have to clarify something, we got together with two families, and didn't go to any of the three houses, we went to someone else's house. They were out of town, and had a bigger house than any of us. Anyway, when we got there, Nathan and I went down stairs, and played a game of chess. He was playing easy on me, and I was doing pretty good considering I am horrible at it! Before we were done with our game, my dad called us up to eat. Before we ate though, we had to take pictures. I didn't want to do that. Oh!! The people that were in the picture were all people from our church. One couple was going to move in a couple weeks, and had a four month old baby!! He was SO cute, though he was napping when we took the pictures! The other couple were grandparents, and the husband is the executive pastor at my church! Anyway, after we took the pictures, we ate! I LOVE everything, so I had a little bit of each! It was SO good!! My favorites are sweet potatoes and cranberries! After that, the adults talked for awhile, and eventually I asked my mom if Nathan and I could go in the hot tub. It had already been warmed. She said yes, so we got on our swimsuits, and after being in the a little bit, Nathan got this CRAZY idea that he wanted to go jump in the pool that hadn't been heated! After he did it once, he said, "It's FREEZING!! That was AWESOME!! I'm gonna do it again!!" He's crazy. Anyway, after he had jumped in the pool about five times, for some crazy reason, I wanted him to jump in two more times. He said he would only is I jumped in. I said okay, not really thinking correctly. After he jumped in once, I said I mean' he had to do it a total of three times. (You can see I was trying to get out of it!) So after he did it three times, he held me to my word, and said now it was my turn to jump. I said by the time he counted to 180, I would jump. Some he started counting REALLY fast, and I told him to stop, and count slower, he said he would, but if I didn't jump by 180, I would owe him $10.00. I agreed to it, because I was going to jump anyway, and I wouldn't have broken my promise. Anyway, to make a long story short, I jumped when he was at 140, and it was FREEZING!!!!!!! I was SO cold!! Immediately, I jumped into the hot tub. Nathan started laughing at me because of the expression on my face when I came up from under the water. But who wouldn't have a funny expression? It was freezing!! Anyway, after we came in from the hot tub, everyone though it was time for dessert, so we had it. After that, we decided to watch Who Framed Roger Rabbit? but eventually had to stop it because my parents thought it was to inappropriate for us to watch. The only logical explanation we had for why it was rated PG, instead of PG13, was because cartoons were probably only rated as high as PG back then. We decided to play Wii instead, and taught the executive pastor and his wife how to play. The people with the baby left soon after that, and everyone still there, decided to eat more food. Everyone left soon after that. Overall, it was a good Thanksgiving!

My birthday gift...

My mom took me to see Wicked for my birthday!!!!!! I saw it yesterday! It is a GREAT musical!! It is the story behind The Wizard of Oz. Here is what it is about.... There is this girl with green skin who's not pretty and goes to this school, and becomes room mates with this really popular and pretty girl. They start out HATING each other, and then become BEST friends!! And due to certain circumstances, one is forced to become The Wicked Witch of the West, and the other is forced to become Glinda the Good Witch. And then Dorothy arrives. From then on, it is about how they secretly keep their friendship until the The Wicked Witch of the West's death. I would HIGHLY recommend it!!! It is only in L.A. until January 11th!!! OH!! I also got a mug that says Wicked on it.

We are undeafeted except for our 1st game. (except I don't know about this game...we may lose.) We are the best team in our division!! I met a lot of new girls. I have had fun. I hope we win! Watching Volleyball!!

Last week, I saw Maddie's sister, Tessa play volleyball! It was very fun to watch! They are very good!!! Tessa played against Fullerton (she goes to La Habra), and they one 3 of 5 matches. They won the first one, then the second, Fullerton won the third match, and La Habra won the fourth!! All of the matches were very close though. I was glad La Habra won. I played volleyball at my Friday school a couple days later and it barely got over the net. It wasn't that fun. I wished that I could play with ppl who were good. Anyway, the volleyball game was very fun!! I was glad I got to go!!!

3 things Sophia did recently....

Sunday, my dad came home from a Friday-Sunday retreat, and my cat Sophia missed him so much, she climbed on the couch and put her paws on my dad wanting him to pick her up!!! It was SO cute!!
I think it was Tuesday, and I was holding Sophia and my mom was right behind me, and Sophia stretched out her paws to be held by my mom.
Sometime in September, we were doing school on the computer, and my cat was laying right by the printer, and twitching her leg in her sleep. We concluded she was having a good dream. Then she suddenly woke up like she was having a bad dream. So we petted her, and she eventually fell back asleep.
That's it!

My vacation

I have been doing SO many things on my vacation!!!!!!
Tuesday I went swimming and my grandpa also gave me a massage.
Wednesday we went swimming and also to a lavender farm...smelled terrific!!!....and went to this place called Del Sol. If you don't know what Del Sol is, it is this place where stuff changes color in the sun!!! I got a palm tree keychain that changes from clear to an orangish pink color and my mom got nail polish that changes from silver-green to purplish pink. Nathan got a necklace. The store was AWESOME!!! We also went to this olive place, and they sold green stuffed olives and a lot of other stuff, but the green stuffed olives were the only olives they sold....pretty dumb, huh?! My grandpa wanted to go to this wine store and only people 21 or over are aloud in, and so my mom, Nathan, my grandma, and I went to Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory next store. I got a mint filled truffle, Nathan and my grandma got a raspberry filled truffle, and my mom got a sea foam. (I don't really know how to explain a sea foam.) Oh! Before the chocolate factory, my mom saw a sock shop!! I got a pair of socks there. I like them a lot!
Thursday we went hiking and swimming. The hike was SO pretty!!! There was a waterfall at the end of the trail. It was only a trickle, but still pretty!!! The water was freezing cold!!! I climbed some rocks over the water so I could touch the waterfall and moss. Then we hiked back. It was a good hike, though the best place to hike was the Rocky Mountains near Estes Park. (Not really a park.)
Friday (yesterday) we just hung out.
Today is Saturday. My last day in Solvang! So sad! Though I am glad to be going home to Sophia and Tiger (Our cats)! I am going to go back to Del Sol today to get a shirt. I will wear it on Wednesday. I am also going to paint a giant clothes pin to put in my room! We might swim today too!
Tomorrow I am going home and my grandparents are going to stay until Tuesday.
I have had a great week!!!

My life after thursday...

Thursday Nathan got his braces, I had my cello lesson, my grandparents arrived from somewhere Oregon, and I had soccer practice!!!
Friday my friday school started. I am taking a writing class and helping my mom with a California History class. It went pretty well the first day.
Saturday I woke up at 10:00 and read in bed until 11:30 until my mom asked me to make brownies for Nathan's soccer ice cream social. At 2:00 Nathan had his soccer game until 3:00. He tied, 7-7. My dad asked him, "was it sprite or 7 up? Then Nathan had his ice cream social from 3:00-4:00pm. Then we went home and I had my soccer game at 5:00pm. We won 7-6. I had my ice cream social the week before so we went right home after my game. After that, I packed my clothes because we were leaving to Solvang the next day.
Sunday I went to jr high at 9:30. For those of you who were wondering if I was listening, my jr high pastor talked about how pride is the mother of sin. After Jr. High, I went to the kindergarten class I help out with. After church, we went home, and got everything ready to pack in the car, but then my dad realized the thing that goes on top of the car that we borrowed was missing a bolt, so then we tried to find it but couldn't. We finally left at 3:30-4:00. We arrived at the time share in Solvang about 7:30 pm.
Yesterday, we went to Andersen's split pea soup for lunch. By the way... if you ever go to Solvang, and like split pea soup, you NEED to go to Andersen's!!! After that, we went walking around Solvang, and I bought some post cards since I collect them. Then, my dad, brother, and I went downstairs and played ping-pong and pool. I had never played pool before and I thought I did fine for a 1st timer. At 5:00pm, we went to this thing called Meet the Manager. We had food there and got free satchet of lavender (it smells TERRIFIC!!), and got a free Del Sol frisbee. For those of you who don't know what Del Sol is, it is this company that makes lots of things that indoors it is plain, but in the sun gets colorful. Very cool! There was also free wine tasting. That night, we started reading Harry Potter!! I have been wanting to read it, and my parents said the only way I could read it is it we read it as a family and talked about it. It is VERY good so far.
This morning I woke up and read for awhile, then got up and got ready for the day. Right now I am writing on my blog, my brother and dad are playing basketball on xbox, my grandparents are talking and I don't know what my mom is doing. I don't know what we are going to do today, but I guess I will find out and tell you.

By the way, for those of you who do not know about Solvang, it is this cute little town with lots of stuff to do and lots of stores to shop at. It is about an hour away from Santa Barbara.
That is what has been going on in my life!

My Trip to the Zoo

I went to the zoo yesterday with Marsella for those of you who know her! We saw LOTS of animals like giraffes, elephants, zebras, tigers, a black bear, sea lions, and a whole lot more!!! It would have been very fun except for one thing. Nathan, Marsella, Sophia (Marsella's little sister), and I were playing tag at a playground in the zoo. Sophia was it, and I was trying to run away. But I was by a mister, and the ground around it was wet, and as I started to run, I slipped and fell and got dirt all over my pants and shirt! And guess what?! I happened to have a white shirt on! I was mad at myself and kinda embarrassed that my white shirt got all dirty. And I admit it, I started to cry a little. But other than that, I had a great day!!! We stopped by the store on the way back to the car, and I bought a postcard (because I collect postcards and I always by one when I go somewhere) and a cute zebra cup (because I liked it)! Overall, it was a good day!

C.S. Lewis once said that it is better to love and miss than to never have loved at all. But is that true?
Let's explore that a little....

Let's say you were very close to your mom and she gets cancer and dies. Would it have been better to not know her at all? I'll give you a minute to think about that.... What do you think? What about all the memories you made with her? What about the fun times you had together? Would it have really been worth it not to ever love her?

Now let's go to Canada. Pretend there is a woman that lives there that was engaged but her sweetheart was killed. She loved him SO much that she cried for forever. After she was done crying she decided to never love anyone again, and had a hardened heart and never loved anyone ever. Do you think she should have done that?

I don't think so.
I once had a cat name Pouncer. We got her at the same time as Tiger (Nathan's cat). She was a great cat! And one time my mom let her outside after midnight, and she never came back. There were coyotes and raccoons where we lived, so she probably got eaten by one of them. And we were supposed to leave for Disneyland a couple weeks later. I didn't think I would have a fun time at Disneyland, but I did. We put some food and water out for her when we were gone, but didn't know if she ate the food or another cat. Same with the water.
She never came back. I missed her for months, and then about three months later, I got Sophia!! She could never replace Pouncer, but I still loved her. And now 5 years later, I still have Sophia!
But anyway... I'm glad I had Pouncer for 2 years. I would agree with C.S. Lewis that it is better to love and miss than to never have loved at all.

Golden Retriever Adopting Tiger Cubs!!!

This is SO cool.....

CANEY, Kan. —
A dog at a southeast Kansas zoo has adopted three tiger cubs abandoned by their mother. Safari Zoological Park owner Tom Harvey said the tiger cubs were born Sunday, but the mother had problems with them.

A day later, the mother stopped caring for them. Harvey said the cubs were wandering around, trying to find their birth mother, who wouldn't pay attention to them. That's when the cubs were put in the care of a golden retriever, Harvey said.

Harvey said it's unusual for dogs to care for tiger cubs, but it does happen. He said he has seen reports of pigs nursing cubs in China, and he actually got the golden retriever after his wife saw television accounts of dogs caring for tiger cubs.

Puppies take about the same amount of time as tiger cubs to develop, and Harvey said the adoptive mother just recently weaned her own puppies.

"The timing couldn't have been any better," he said.

The mother doesn't know the difference, Harvey said. He said the adopted mother licks, cleans and feeds the cubs.

The Safari Zoological Park is a licensed facility open since 1989 and specializes in endangered species.

It has leopards, lions, cougars, baboons, ring-tailed lemurs, bears and other animals. It currently has seven white tigers and two orange tigers.

Because whit tigers are inbred from the first specimen found more than a half-century ago, they are not as genetically stable as orange tigers.

The zoo's previous litter of white tiger cubs was born April 23, although one of the three has since gone to a private zoo near Oklahoma City.

My Earthquake experience

I haven't had time to write about my earthquake experience, but here it is...
I was sitting at my computer checking my email, then everything just starts to shake. A couple seconds before, I was calling my brother to come here. So when it started to shake, I was thinking, "What is he doing to make it shake so much?" Then I realized it was an earthquake!!
I've been in California for three years now, and this was my 1st earthquake. It was kinda scary!! So I got in a corner, and I heard my brother Nathan calling me to go outside with my mom. We made it outside. When we came back in, nothing was broken but our cats were freaked out!!
Comment and tell me what happened to you when the earthquake started!

Easter!!!

Easter is tomorrow!!! I'm so excited!! I love waking up and opening my Easter basket, and doing the Easter egg hunt!!
My mom found a new way to color eggs this year. It is really cool. What you do, is first, you hard boil eggs. Then when they are really hot, color it with a crayon. While you are coloring it, cover the pot full of the other eggs, with a pan or, something to keep the heat in. Then, when you are done with the egg you were coloring, put in on a spoon, and put the spoon in the refrigerator. Then start your next egg!! It is really fun to do!! My family is going to do it that way every year!!

Spring!!!

Spring is in the air!! I'm so excited!! I love spring. I love when baby animals are born. They're SO cute!!! I love spring break. No more school for a couple weeks!! But my most favorite thing to do on the first day of spring is to buy flowers and then plant them!! I have been doing that for awhile. It's my family's tradition. I love picking out the flowers to plant, and then bringing them home to plant. I love the feel of the soil when I'm planting the flowers. I'm so glad we have spring!!

But if you find it interesting, put a comment on if you like! Please, no mean comments for those of you who are completely, 100% bored with it, please, NO RUDE OR MEAN COMMENTS! You can tell me how you think it could be better, I wouldn't mind that! I hope you enjoy my first ever, one of a kind, MeMyselfandEye blog!!

School... ugh!!

Who likes school? I like certain subjects, I don't like them all. I like when everything is easy that day, like making graphs for math! (That's what I'm doing right now in math.) I sometimes wish though that I didn't have school! Then I could play my Wii, check my email, play on the computer, blog, and do whatever I wanted all day!! But on the other hand, I want an education! I want to work with animals, and to be able to do that, I have to go to school. Think how boring it would be if you didn't do school at ALL! You would get plumb bored of everything. (At least I think I would!) If everyone went to school except the people in your family, then you would have to wait until your friends get home, then when you ask them to do something with you, they say, " No, sorry Eliza (or whatever your name is), I have to do homework! I won't be able to play until 4:30." Now, wouldn't that be annoying? You may ask, well what about Saturday and Sunday? One of those days might be their family day. Or, they may go to a special place as a family for a whole day! Then you couldn't hang out with them! One more reason, don't you want to have a good job when you grow up? School is supposed to be hard, (and maybe boring) but make the best of it! If you like cooking, you still you math, if you want to work with animals (like me!), you use science. Every day life, you use school. So, make the best of it, and TRY to enjoy it! If you find it impossible to enjoy, put up with it! I'm not saying school everyone will like school, but give it a try! If you like seeing your friends every day, that's a reason to look forward to school. But if you are home schooled like me, you will probably be done with school sooner than people who go to public or private school! That's a good reason! Then when you are done with school, you can do whatever you want (I don't mean WHATEVER you want! Like drive your parent's car if you don't have a permit or license! Your parents probably wouldn't let you do that!) ! If you do your best, and try your hardest, and if you have a good attitude, then even if you don't get the best grades, you are doing well!! But don't take my word for it, I'm just a kid, but kids can still do things! I hope this was an encouragement to you! If it wasn't, oh well! I will not think of myself as a COMPLETE failer, just a little one! jk. Have a good day trying your hardest!!

Valentines Day!!

Valentines day is coming up!! I'm so excited!! I like getting the boxes of candy best, I think!! I know it's all about love and everything, but that's not why I like it. This is how Valentines day began. (For anyone who wants to know!)

How did this heart-filled, card-sending, candy-giving holiday begin? The exact details of its origins are not clear, but the basis behind Valentine’s Day stems from a priest named Valentine who lived during the reign of Roman emperor Claudius II, also known as “Claudius the Cruel.”

Back in 270 A.D. Christians were under severe persecution. During this same time Claudius II was also having great difficulty enlisting men into his military leagues. The emperor realized that the married men did not want to leave their wives to serve in the military, and many of the single men had sweethearts or girlfriends that they, too, did not want to be away from.

Claudius decided he would put an end to his problem. He ordered that no more marriages were to be performed and that all engagements were to be annulled. Valentine chose to disobey the emperor’s command. Understanding the sanctity of marriage as a part of God’s plan for mankind, he continued to secretly perform marriage ceremonies for Christian couples.

When Claudius discovered the priests’ disobedience he ordered the arrest of Valentine. The faithful priest was beaten with clubs, then beheaded. His death occurred on February 14, 270 A.D.

As is common with many other holidays a pagan holiday coincided with what became known as Valentine’s Day. Christians wanted to remember St. Valentine and offer believers an alternative to the pagan holiday, much as we now hold fall festivals on Halloween. One of the traditions that carried over into Valentine’s Day was that of drawing names. Each maiden’s and bachelor’s names would be put into a box and drawn out in pairs. These couple would exchange gifts, and would be partnered for the evening’s celebration.

Opinions vary as to how the hearts and flowers became associated with Valentine’s Day, but many attribute the first Valentines to a young French duke who was captured at the battle of Agincourt during the 15th century. He was kept a prisoner in the Tower of London for many years and, during his captivity, wrote hundreds of beautiful poems to his wife. Sixty of these are on display in the British Museum today. These somehow became known as Valentines.

Centuries later a daughter of Henry IV of France gave a party in honor of St. Valentine. Each lady received a bouquet of flowers from her chosen Valentine. In more recent times commercial enterprise gets a great deal of the credit for modern-day traditions. Placing candy into heart-shaped boxes and offering ready-made Valentine cards has turned into a multi-million dollar business.

Still, whatever our reasons for acknowledging Valentine’s Day, it has become a romantic tradition. It is one time of the year when most people go out of their way to express their love for others.

That is how Valentines day got started!!
